The Opportunity

Grammy Award-nominated composer Jake Heggie, and philanthropist Bob Ellis, were concerned that opera wasn’t reaching a younger audience, and about what this meant for the future of the medium they loved.

They wanted to use the intimate, sound-rich podcast format to highlight the unique, thrilling, and human side of opera.

The Impact

“We listeners feel as if we’re eavesdropping on a dialogue between friends, rather than sitting through another celebrity interview…You never know which way the conversation is going to turn in these podcasts, which is half the fun.”

So hoping there will be more seasons!

In each episode you get such a wonderful glimpse into the lives of these singers and the lessons we can all learn from their journeys. I love the way each are so amazed and delighted by Jake’s question about their relationship with their voice as though it were a separate person. I also loved hearing them sing scales and warmup exercises. It’s such an integral part of every singer’s life – it feels like an intimate peek...

Thanks for Season 1! Please make more 🙏🏻

The Maestro demystifies the Masters

How can someone like Jake Heggie, with such a phenomenal creative gift, world class talent and immortal body of work – make talking to world class opera singers seem like a conversation you could jump in on if it happened across the table from you at a Denny’s? The answer is that his true super power is his giant generous heart. I believe that like attracts like. In a genre so often maligned for its pretense, “Sing Louder” demystifies the mystique meant to separate the artists from the “common folk” and reminds us all that the creative spirit, the courage to follow your calling and persevere despite obstacles you face and to collaborate joyfully, is a valuable treasure whether you’re a classical musician or an off tune Whistler. As a classical singer, creative, and normal human being; I’m just so glad to have discovered this podcast!

Deeper appreciation

I’ve had deep appreciation for Sasha Cooke since I first heard her in concert with the San Francisco Symphony in music by Berlioz and Mahler. Since then I’ve tried to attend or listen to her opera performances but always come back to [her way] with songs. Thanks Jake for giving me an even deeper appreciation through your delightful and informative podcast. I look forward to the entire series.
